UNESCO, as the specialized organization of the United Nations in the fields of education, science, culture, information and communication, was established at the end of the Second World War with the understanding that the war started in the minds and the culture of peace should be cultivated in the minds above all else.

UNESCO, as the specialized organization of the United Nations in the fields of education, science, culture, information and communication, was established at the end of the Second World War with the understanding that the war started in the minds and the culture of peace should be cultivated in the minds above all else. The UNESCO Convention was adopted in London in November 1945 with the participation of 44 states. Turkey, is among the first 10 signatory states. The UNESCO Convention was ratified in our country with the law no 4895 of 20 May 1946. The number of members of UNESCO rose to 195 with the acceptance of Palestine in 2011. There are also 10 Partner (Affiliated) Member States in UNESCO. UNESCO; The General Conference consists of three main structures: Executive Board and Secretariat. The most competent body of the institution is the General Conference. The General Conference determines the policies and basic work plan of the Institution, accepts UNESCO's work programs and budget, and also selects the Executive Board Members and the General Director. The Executive Board consists of 58 members elected for four years by the decision of the General Conference. The choices are made largely by considering the diversity of cultures and geographical distribution. The Executive Board meets twice a year. Turkey was represented at the Executive Committee for 27 years since 1946.
