Turkey reveals official election results

Turkey's Supreme Elections Committee has revealed the final, official results of the country’s Nov. 1 general election.

According to the data, the Justice and Development (AK) Party secured 49.50 percent of the vote -- a higher proportion than any of the predictions by opinion polls -- winning 317 seats in the 550-member Grand National Assembly.

The Republican People's Party (CHP) gained 25.32 percent of the votes (134 seats) while the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) secured 11.90 percent votes (40 seats).

The Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) secured 10.76 percent of the vote, winning 59 seats.

Committee chairman Sadi Guven said that out of the 56,949,009 registered voters, 48,537,695 had cast their ballot, meaning the turnout stood at 85.23 percent.

People in 54 countries voted at 113 voting stations.

Guven also said the election was carried out in a "secure and transparent" way.

According to the Turkish constitution, the General Assembly needs to gather at 3 p.m. local time [1300 GMT] five days after the announcement of the official results.

The Turkish parliament is expected to have its first session on Nov. 17 during which an oath-taking ceremony for newly elected members will take place.
