A powerful 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Greece’s Ionian Islands, causing no casualties or damage according to preliminary reports, police have said.
The Geodynamic Institute of Athens said Tuesday the quake occurred at 9:10 a.m. between Lefkada and Corfu, with its epicenter located 11 kilometers off Lefkada’s southwest coast at a depth of 5 kilometers.
Local media reports suggested one person, a sixty-year old woman, died in the Island of Lefkada. Police have announced they will make a further statement later in the day regarding casualties.
The tremor caused power interruptions on the island, and the schools were closed for the day.
The earthquake blow was felt in all Ionian Islands and Greek capital Athens.
