Flooding causes mass evacuations in England
Hundreds of people forced to leave homes after rivers break banks
Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes following heavy flooding in the north of England.
Police advised up to 400 people to leave their houses in the town of York on Sunday after experts warned two rivers were at risk of breaking their banks following heavy rainfall.
It follows similar evacuations on Saturday in other regions, including Lancashire, where the severe weather disrupted the electricity supply.
Britain’s army has been deployed to help with the response after heavy rain throughout December caused severe flooding in Cumbria, close to England’s border with Scotland. Many rivers elsewhere in the country have reached record levels.
Prime Minister David Cameron was due to chair a meeting of the government’s emergency committee later on Sunday.
The U.K. Meteorological Office said there would be less wet weather in the country Sunday and Monday, although the rain was predicted to return later in the week.
