Yemen's southern provinces, including Abyan, have been the scene of bombings that has claimed the lives of dozens of Yemeni soldiers in recent months.
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has flourished in the chaos in Yemen, which fell into civil war when Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including capital Sanaa, in 2014.
