At least 41 missing after landslide in south China

Chinese rescue teams searched Sunday for at least 27 people believed to be missing after a landslide collapsed several buildings at an industrial park in southern Shenzhen city.

State news agency Xinhua reported that four people had been rescued amid rescue efforts joined by 1,500 people after the landslide occurred at around 11.40 a.m. (0340GMT).

Rescue officials in Guangming New District said three of those pulled from the rubble had minor injuries while the fourth was unscathed.

A total of 22 buildings, containing 15 companies, were buried in the incident.

The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post cited an employee working in the area as saying that mud had been dumped near the industrial park over two to three years.

“Local residents have complained about the problem for a long time, but it has not been solved,” he said.

More than 900 residents were evacuated from the area as of 5 p.m. (0900GMT).
