Welfare Party became first party in 1995

Dr. Necmettin Erbakan also became prime minister. Later, upon the resignation of Erbakan, the Refahyol government dissolved (June 1997). On May 21, 1997, the Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Public Prosecutor Vural Savaş filed a lawsuit against RP while he was in power on the grounds of "acts contrary to the principle of the Secular Republic". The Welfare Party was closed by the Constitutional Court on January 16, 1998, after the 8-month trial. Necmettin Erbakan, Şevket Kazan, Ahmet Tekdal, Şevki Yılmaz, Hasan Hüseyin Ceylan and İbrahim Halil Çelik were banned from politics for 5 years. The anti-secular actions of party officials, accusations against the founder of the state, and the politics of the headscarf were also cited in the grounds for the closure. Among the party's programs; providing spiritual development in Turkey, to establish a just order, perform heavy industry, to improve relations with the Islamic countries, to remove interest, had religious-based views as the futility of Turkey's accession to the EU. Fazilet Party was founded as the political heir of the Welfare Party.
