US: Daily coronavirus deaths top 4,000 for first time
New number breaks record of 3,854 deaths set on Wednesday
Daily coronavirus-related fatalities surpassed the 4,000 mark in the US, breaking the record set a day earlier.
According to a running tally of Johns Hopkins University, the country has recorded 4,085 deaths on Thursday, as well as nearly 275,000 cases.
The new grim milestone broke the record set on Wednesday when the daily deaths were standing at 3,854.
In the last there days, 11,706 people lost their battle against the disease, the Hopkins data showed. Also infections remain on the rise following travel for Christmas holidays and family gatherings.
The most affected states by the virus, California (2.5 million cases), Texas (1.9 million cases) and Florida (1.4 million cases) have reported a surge in cases and deaths in recent days.
The US continues to be the worst-hit country by the virus, with more than 21.5 million cases and over 365,600 deaths to date.
