The artist, whose real name is Müslüm Akbaş, was born on May 7, 1953 in Fıstıközü village of Halfeti district of Şanlıurfa as the first child of agricultural workers Mehmet and Emine Akbaş. The family of Gürses, who has two brothers named Zeyno and Ahmet, migrated to Adana when he was 3 years old due to economic difficulties. Müslüm Gürses could not continue his education after primary school and worked as a shoe repairman and tailor for a while. The artist, who participated in a sound contest held in a tea garden in Adana when he was 14 years old in 1967, with the support of his mother, attracted attention as the winner. Müslüm Baba, whose life passed with many difficulties, died at the age of 60 in the hospital where he was treated in intensive care for 4 months after bypass surgery in 2013.
