Malaysian party calls for boycott of Israeli products
Malaysian People’s Economy Party calls on businessmen, people to boycott Israeli products, enterprises
A political party in Malaysia launched a boycott campaign against Israeli products and enterprises on Wednesday to protest the U.S. decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
"I call on the businessmen and the people to boycott Israeli products and enterprises,” Mohd Ridzuan Abdullah, president of the Malaysian People’s Economy Party (PEKIRA), said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur.
“We will not use Israeli products from now onward,” he added.
Abdullah mentioned a similar boycott campaign in 2014 against U.S.-based fast-food chain operating in Malaysia.
“We had previously organized such a boycott and caused the operator to suffer a major financial loss. We can do the same thing again."
He also called on the Malaysian Prime minister Najib Razak to stand firm on the issue.
Last week, Trump announced his decision -- despite widespread opposition -- to formally recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and relocate Washington's embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.
Jerusalem remains at the heart of the Israel-Palestine conflict, with Palestinians hoping that East Jerusalem -- now occupied by Israel -- might eventually serve as the capital of a Palestinian state.
