İsmet İnönü, who was considered to be the second man, 12 years as the President and 17 years as the Prime Minister, died on December 25, 1973 at 16.10 in the Pink Mansion at the age of 89. The funeral of İnönü was held on Friday, December 28th. With the proposal of Prime Minister Naim Talu, it was decided to bury the body in Anıtkabir. Passing by the corpse placed in the catapult prepared in front of the Turkish Grand National Assembly on the morning of December 27th, the people of Ankara offered their respect and love to him for 24 hours. Following the state ceremony held in front of the Parliament on December 28, the coffin, which was put into the gun cart pulled by 16 generals and the students of the War Academy, was brought to the Maltepe Mosque. President Korutürk, ministers, members of parliament, local and foreign representatives and a large crowd attended the march from the parliament to the mosque. The body of İnönü, who was brought to Anıtkabir after the march where cannon shots were made every 5 minutes, was buried directly opposite Atatürk's mausoleum.
