Fire threatens homes on Turkey's southwest coast

Turkish firefighters were battled a blaze across 100 hectares (250 acres) of scrubland near the southwestern resort town of Bodrum on Saturday.

Fanned by strong winds, the flames threatened homes in Islamhaneleri, 12 kilometers (7 miles) to the west of the port, according to a fire official who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media. Thirty fire engines, a plane and helicopter were dispatched as locals fought the blaze with hoses and buckets of water.

The Bodrum peninsula is a popular holiday destination.
