A car rammed into the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) headquarters in the early hours of Monday, police in Berlin said.
A police statement said a 58-year-old man was the main suspect in the incident, which occurred at 3:20 am local time (0220GMT) on Monday.
The man, who was hospitalized for head injuries, described the act as a suicide attempt, the police also said.
Initial investigations found that the car was loaded with three fuel cans, while the suspect also admitted that he left small gas cans in front of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) headquarters.
The SPD has been engaged in talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats to form a coalition government.
