11 Daesh terrorists captured in Iraq's Nineveh province
Iraqi officials continue to warn of threat posed by terrorist 'sleeper cells'
At least 11 Daesh terrorists were captured by Iraqi forces on Wednesday while trying to infiltrate into Iraq’s northern Nineveh province, according to a local security source.
“The 11 gunmen fled Iraq’s northeastern Tuz Khurmatu district, where large-scale military operations remain underway,” Federal Police officer Hasan al-Ghazali told Anadolu Agency.
According to al-Ghazali, a joint police/army force captured the gunmen on Wednesday as they tried to enter Nineveh through the Al-Shoura district roughly 45 kilometers south of Mosul.
The Daesh presence has recently been purged from Iraq -- by Iraqi forces and a U.S.-led military coalition -- after the terrorist group overran much of the country in 2014.
Iraqi officials, however, continue to warn of Daesh “sleeper cells” that they say remain in the country.
